It is currently under reconstruction in order to become the new stadium of the football club Atlético Madrid. The stadium will replace Vicente Calderón Stadium as the home of Atlético in the summer of 2016.

The basic concrete structure of the stadium was built between August 2007 and February 2009, but work was then halted for financial reasons.
